Pool Safety for Kids
Springtime and summer in Florida bring us beautiful weather and warmer pools. Unfortunately, the harsh reality is that during this time of the year we see spike in children drownings. In fact, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for children ages 1-4 according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). We have some swimming pool safety tips to help safeguard your children from these horrible statistics.
Watch your children closely in or around water. They need to be within arm’s length at any given time. Most drownings occur with the family members close by. It doesn’t take more than 30 seconds for a child to drown.
Teach your children to swim. Developmental stages are different for every child so consider their comfort level and age. Some swimming instructors begin lessons as early as 6 months of age. If affordability is a concern there are places like your local YMCA that offer scholarship programs and free swimming lessons for children.
Get CPR certified by a credible agency. The American Red Cross offers CPR certifications that cover CPR on infants to adults. This isn’t just valuable for your own children, but for any life threatening situation you could possibly find
yourself in. CPR saves lives.
Flotation devices should always be considered in and around water. Whether you are boating or swimming at your own pool, if your child is not a strong swimmer you should equip then with a personal flotation device that is approved for their size/weight. It’s important if you are at the beach to also pay attention to any rip tide warnings and adhere to the rules.
Child barriers around your pool at home are an important consideration to protect your children from an accidental drowning. Be sure to research the company you choose to install your barrier. If you have young children in your household and a pool at your home; purchasing a child barrier is a necessary precaution to ensure your child’s safety.
Do you have a pool leak? Getting that fixed will also keep your family and budget safe!
